Mono Housing

Precast Modular Housing

Mono Block has utilised and adapted its precast housing units over the last 35 years.

The company has been in a position to design and install modular systems that are cost effective and rapidly constructed.

The modular structural products have been successfully used by various private and NGO sector clients. In addition it has been approved by Durban Metro and other
municipalities as a suitable structure for low-income housing, amongst others.

Due to the flexibility of the design and its modular construction, primarily rural areas have utilized the Mono Block housing system.

Areas where the housing system have been used include Ballito, Stanger, Mooi River, Mandini, Kranskop, Greytown, Dundee, Dalton and Wartburg.

Advantages of using the Mono Block construction modules for buildings include:

  • Cost competitiveness against block, timber and brick structures;
  • Quality and robustness of the final reinforced concrete product;
  • Flexibility for changes to the overall layout during construction;
  • Labour intensive; and
  • Speed of erection.

Modular structures that have been constructed to-date include the following:

  • Labour housing;
  • Low Income housing;
  • Ablution blocks;
  • Schools;
  • Clinics;
  • Garages;
  • Carports;
  • Storerooms; and
  • Maid’s quarters.

Affordable Housing

Since 1973 Monoblock has constructed solid, durable labour housing for the farming community.

More recently clinics, schools, ablution blocks and crèches have been built using the Monoblock system of interlocking reinforced concrete panels.

Clients include various NGO organisations and municipalities, including the Durban Metro. The competitive advantages of the Monoblock interlocking system include :

  • Speed of erection. A three bedroomed house with kitchen, bathroom and living room typically takes 10 working days to complete;
  • Cost competitiveness against block, timber and brick structures;
  • Flexibility in design;
  • Labour intensiveness; and
  • Quality and robustness of the final product.

Due to the modular nature of the Monoblock system, the units may be configured to any practical layout. A basic two roomed cottage is shown below as is the larger “supervisors” cottage.
